A chilling little factoid for us to consider! If women continue to get elected to state seats at the same rate they have for the past 25 years, it will take ONE HUNDRED years until there’s gender parity in Congress.
We ought to do better.
We ought to elect more women to office.
We ought to step out of our comfort zones and proactively do what it takes to make that a reality.
And, we ought to look inwards in order to see how our implicit bias’s may have contributed to the abysmal imbalance of the male dominated power structure in Washington.
And – very importantly – we need to hold the media to account for their unfair, unbalanced and often highly misogynistic coverage of women candidates.
Think about it for a moment! Tracy calls this his, “Bernie Sanders double-standard”… Ol’ Bernie can show up to a rally in a wrinkled suit with his hair-a-hot-mess, ketchup stains on his tie, and no one bats an eye.
But, can you even fathom what would happen if a woman candidate showed up, equally unkempt? She would get SKEWERED by the media.
“Name It. Change It.” is a non-partisan project that works to end sexist and misogynistic coverage of women candidates by all members of the press – from bloggers to radio hosts to television pundits.
Two studies that they conducted, show that when newspapers comment on the physical appearance of women and/or use sexist rhetoric, they negatively impact how many voters view women in numerous ways. When coverage focuses on a woman’s appearance, she pays the price in the race, in her favorability, and in how likely voters are to vote for her.
Also, on today’s show, we’re jumping back in with the Whitmer campaign, canvassing door to door. WE WANT TO HEAR YOUR STORIES! And in our candidate spotlight, you will meet a trailblazer, Rashida Tlaib, who is poised to be the very first Muslim Congresswomen. This is what change sounds like!
Special thank you to our wonderful sponsors!
