Congrats to us! Voter turnout was epic! And – no surprise – women led that pack, representing 52% of everyone who showed up at that ballot boxes. This level of citizen participation has not been seen in a non-presidential election in decades – a very reassuring sign of a robust democracy. For those of us who have been feeling anxious throughout the whole process, this fact alone is reason to celebrate!
But, thankfully, there’s a whole lot more reasons we can all celebrate!
When the 116th Congress convenes in January 2019, we will witness 100 women in the house for the first time in history! And, so many historical firsts have been accomplished in the process!!
Kristi Noem of South Dakota, Kay Ivey of Alabama and Kim Reynolds of Iowa will be the first female republican Governors of their respective states. Ayanna Pressley the first black woman from Massachusetts going to congress…
Ilhan Omar, of Minnesota, and Rashida Tlaib, of Michigan (whom you met here) are the first Muslim women elected to the U.S. Congress. Sylvia Garcia and Veronica Escobar will be the first Latinas to represent Texas. And the first two female Native Americans to be elected to congress are Sharice Davids of Kansas and, another Run Like A Girl candidate, New Mexico’s Deb Haaland…
Our candidate Gretchen Whitmer finished her gubernatorial race front and center – and in so doing, she lead an all female ticket for the win. Michigan selected a woman for every statewide office on Tuesday’s ballot: from governor, to U.S. senator, attorney general and secretary of state. And at the state level, women grabbed 8 more seats in the house, increasing their numbers to 41, and they tripled their numbers in the state senate from 4 to 11.
Just as we were fortunate enough to be at Gretchen’s primary win back on August 7th, we returned to the scene of the crime at the Soundboard Theater at the Motor City Casino on Tuesday night. And leading up her victory announcement, the excitement in that room was palpable.
Also featured on this episode, and old friend of Tracy’s, Activist Alyssa Milano.
And, finally, from team Run Like A Girl, a little Op-Ed – podcast style, on the historic nature of this election season, why we have so much reason for optimism going forward, and we share the words of wisdom from many of the candidates we have had the privilege to interview this season!
